Cryptologic Bonus Video Poker

October 8, 2010

Cryptologic offers a series of games called Bonus Video Poker. These are not offered by any other online gaming software provider. The Bonus Video Poker game is different from the usual variant in one material respect. This article explains the difference and then describes the mechanics of the game play.

Every hand in video poker is dealt from a single standard deck. In the normal variant, when the player marks the cards to be held and clicks the draw button the remaining cards are discarded. They are not mixed back into the deck and cannot be dealt to the hand as replacement cards. This increases the chance of the player getting a winning combination. In Bonus Video Poker the discarded cards are not kept aside but are mixed back into the deck which is shuffled. Therefore they can be dealt again in the hand. In fact they have as much probability of being dealt as any other card. This is a handicap for the player. But Bonus Video Poker makes up for this handicap by awarding a bonus payout if a discarded card is dealt again. Hence the name of this variant is Bonus Video Poker. The payout is proportional to the number of cards repeated.

The game play in Bonus Video Poker starts in the same manner as in the normal variant. The player chooses the number of hands he wants to play, the coin denomination and the number of coins he wants to wager. The player then clicks the Deal button and the initial hand is dealt. Cryptologic video poker offers the Auto Hold feature, which is enabled in the default mode. Therefore the cards recommended to be Held are automatically marked. The player is free to go ahead with this selection or can override it. In any event once he makes his decision he clicks the Draw button.

Thereafter the process differs somewhat from the normal video poker game, but everything happens simultaneously so it is not easy for a new player to at once discern the differences. The cards not marked Hold are displayed in a small cell on the top right of the screen. This is to allow the player to verify that he has been given the bonus correctly. Replacement cards are given for those discarded. If any of them has been dealt earlier they are marked with a star. The total bonus awarded is shown in the cell on the top right. The bonus per card is specified as a percentage of the total bet and the total bonus is rounded off to the nearest 0.01 credit. Hence it will not appear as perfect multiples of the bonus for one card. The total payout shown is the payout from the game plus the bonus payout. Thereafter the player can stake his entire winnings in the Double Up gamble game.

Cryptologic offer the Bonus Video Poker in a number of video poker games, which include Tens or Better, Joker Poker, Jacks or Better, Double Bonus, Double Double Bonus, Deuces Wild, All American, Aces and Faces and Super Jackpot. All these games can be played at Cryptologic online casinos like InterCasino and VIP Casino.
