Download vs. No Download Online Casino Software

November 27, 2008

Players who want to enjoy online casinos can now do so in a number of ways. You are able to download the casino software onto your computer or play a no download version of the casino. The no download version is known as a flash or instant play version. There are pros and cons to both sorts of casinos and each person needs to take into account their requirements and preferences before deciding which to play.

Differences between Download and No Download Casinos

As technology improves, the quality of no download (flash) casinos is improving as well. They generally have very good graphics and sounds and good game selections. However, they still tend not to offer as much as download casinos. There graphics and sounds are not quite as realistic and they offer fewer games (sometimes as few as one third) of those that are available through the equivalent download casino. No download casinos are just as safe and secure as their download counterparts.

Typical Minimum System Requirements

If you bought your computer within the last few years and have access to the Internet, your computer is likely to have the minimum requirements for gambling online. Download casinos will typically only be compatible for PC computers. Each online casino has different minimum and recommended system requirements. You will need to check these in the FAQ section of the website before you attempt to download the casino software. Download casinos will require a minimum of 20 MB hard drive space and 16 MB RAM. If you have more, you will have access to more casinos. Each game individually can be as small as 2 MB.

Pros of Download Casinos

  • Graphics and sounds tend to be of a higher quality
  • Offer more games than the no download versions
  • Once downloaded, the casino is on your computer for whenever you want to play - you do not have to rely on potentially testy Internet connections and servers
  • Smooth game play, particular noticeable with spinning slots or dealing cards such as in blackjack
  • Less disruptions and tends to be more reliable

Cons of Download Casinos

  • You are limited to playing at the computer where you downloaded the software
  • Greater minimum system requirements than for no download version

Pros of No Download Casinos

  • You can play at any computer without being limited by where you downloaded the software
  • You do not have to download software onto your computer
  • You do not need to uninstall the software if you are not satisfied with the casino
  • You can begin playing immediately without waiting for software to download - in other words, you save time
  • Can be used on Mac computers

Cons of No Download Casinos

  • There may be security implications with you logging into your accounts at multiple computers
  • Although you don't have to download the whole casino, you still need to download each game before you play
  • Graphics and sounds are generally not of the same calibre as the download casinos
