Branded Super Hero Slot Games

Super hero comic strips were started in the first half of the twentieth century. Since then the number of super heroes and their popularity has kept on increasing. Soon super heroes were seen in feature films and television serials. Hence it was only a matter of time before they made their presence felt in online slots.

Cryptologic was the first to exploit the brand value of popular super heroes. It entered into an agreement with Marvel Comics to bring their super hero on the reels. Within about two years Cryptologic had over 15 super hero slot games at its online casinos. These were led by the most popular super heroes Spider Man and the Incredible Hulk, who featured in two online slot games each. The other super heroes included Elektra, Blade, X-Men, Thor, Captain America and Wolverine.

These super hero slot games very closely reflected the legends that had grown around the super heroes. The symbols on the reels represented the source of their super powers, the weapons they used and even their adversaries. Therefore players who were super hero fans and could recognize these connections found extra enjoyment in these slot games. The bonus games on the second screen also featured fights between super heroes and their enemies. The branded super hero slot games became a major competitive advantage for Cryptologic and were offered to gaming operators that used other software platforms as well. Hence it was natural for other software developers to enter this field.

Playtech took Cryptologic head on. It entered into an agreement with Marvel Movies to bring the same super heroes in their slot games. The only difference was that Playtech would be basing its graphics on images from Marvel Movies, whereas Cryptologic had based its graphics on images from Marvel Comics. Playtech has so far released about seven branded super hero slots including Iron Man, The Hulk, Punisher, Blade and X-Men. These slots have become extremely popular at Playtech online casinos. The improvements in software technology have resulted in better audio visual effects. The most interesting feature is the four-level progressive Marvel Jackpot. This feature is played out on a 20 square grid. The player clicks squares to reveal the different levels. The moment three symbols of the same level appear that jackpot is won.

Cryptologic then moved away from Marvel and signed up with the other major creator of super heroes, DC Comics. DC Comics has brands like Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman and Green Lantern, all of which are now on slot games. To create further differentiation from Playtech’s slots Cryptologic introduced an innovative feature called Bonus Bet. By placing an additional wager players may be able to play a rewarding bonus game based on the super hero legend.

Cryptologic and Playtech are the only two online gaming software developers that offer branded super hero slots. Other software developers do offer slots with super hero themes. For example Microgaming offers a game called Fearless Frederick. But without the backing of a brand the slot game totally failed to kick off.
