Fresh Support for Barney Frank's Internet Gambling Initiative

September 15, 2009

The Safe and Secure Internet Gambling Initiative (SSIGI) has launched a new online advertising campaign in support of Barney Frank’s anti-UIGEA bill, which is officially known as the Internet Gambling Regulation, Consumer Protection and Enforcement Act of 2009 or H.R. 2267.

The advertisements project support to the legalization and regulation of online gambling so as to provide a safe and secure environment for millions of American players who enjoy wagering at Internet casinos. The advertisements also project that the government will gain over $60 billion in additional revenues in the first decade itself. The ads will appear on the web sites of high profile publications such as the Washington Post, The Hill and Politico, the Huffington Post, Political Wire and Talking Points Memo. In this context Jeffrey Sandman, spokesperson for SSIGI said, “As Congress searches for ways to pay for health care reform and other worthy programs, it should end the unsuccessful prohibition of Internet gambling and start collecting taxes on the billions in revenue currently lost to unlicensed, offshore gambling operators.” Presently the Department of Justice has taken a strong stance against online gambling by starting to seize accounts of processing payment companies.

SSIGI has identified several issues related to Internet gambling that need to be addressed. These include preventing minors from gambling, incorporating compulsive gambling safeguards, security of financial transactions, generation of new revenues for the Government, providing a regulated online gambling environment and addressing international ramifications. SSIGI also encourages and facilitates players to contact their Congressmen and urge them to support Barney Frank’s bill. SSIGI provides the latest updates on Internet gambling at its web site. SSIGI has a strong presence on social networking forums like Facebook, Twitter and YouTube. In fact it has put up nine videos on YouTube on various issues related to online gambling. SIGGI is endorsed by some powerful names in online gambling that include eCOGRA, GamCare, RGA and EBGA.

This initiative by SSIGI has been intentionally launched just before Barney Frank’s bill is due to come up for hearing this fall. The bill has 54 cosponsors to date. The cosponsors include senior high profile legislators such as George Miller (D-CA), chairman of the Committee on Education and Labor, John Conyers (D-MI), chairman of the Committee on the Judiciary, Charles Rangel (D-NY), chairman of the Committee on Ways and Means, Edolphus Towns (D-NY), chairman of the Committee on Oversight and Government Reform, Pete King (R-NY), ranking member of the Homeland Security Committee and Ron Paul (R-TX), vice-chairman of the Oversight and Investigations subcommittee.

With the battle for legalized online gambling getting more intense, the online gambling industry needs to do everything it can in order to ensure safe and quick passage to Barney Frank’s bill. The initiative by SSIGI will go a long way to help.
