Saving Passwords Can Compromise Online Casino Security
May 12, 2009
Online casinos take extreme precautions in order to ensure the security of financial transactions of their players and sensitive customer information on their servers. They do so in order to protect the funds deposited by their customers at the online casino. This is done by employing the latest SSL protocols and firewalls. The security systems are constantly upgraded and certified by independent experts. All these precautions can be nullified by one act of carelessness on the part of the player.
Online players have to shoulder their part of the responsibility in ensuring the security of their funds at online casinos. After all it is their funds that are at stake. The most important factor in this regard is how they handle their passwords. Many online casinos offer a facility to players that allows them to save their passwords within the casino software. This has two conveniences. The first is that players need not enter their password every time they want to login to the online casino. The second convenience is that forgetful players need not worry about not remembering their passwords. These two advantages are absolutely minor in comparison to the risk that the players are taking by saving the passwords within the casino software. If the password is saved then any person who accesses the online casino from the player's computer, or from a computer on which the player has wagered at the casino, will automatically be logged in to the player’s casino account without having to enter the password. This person then has access to the player's funds and can readily wager with them. When the player next logs in he may well find his funds greatly depleted or in the worst case totally used up. The unauthorized entrant can also change the player's password and thus prevent the real player from logging in into his own account. Hence it can be easily seen that the conveniences offered by saving the password within the casino software are not really worth having.
Different online gaming software providers handle this issue differently. With some online gaming software providers the default act is to enter the password each time that the player logs in. Real Time Gaming and Cryptologic are software providers that follow this procedure. Other software providers like Microgaming, Wizard Gaming and Vegas Technology have a system that allows players to save the password within the software if they want to. Such players have to check a small tick box provided if they want to save their passwords. It is in the interest of the players that they do not check this tick box.
As mentioned earlier there are two types of players who would like to save their passwords. One type is the lazy ones. It is really not inconvenient to key in eight or ten characters that make up the password. This exercise takes a few seconds at most. This excuse for saving passwords is just not acceptable. The other type of players who save their passwords is the ones who frequently forget them. There are several steps that the players can take in order to create passwords that are easy to remember and at the same time are secure enough. What the players should not do is write their passwords on post-it slips and paste the slips on the monitor or the processor for everyone to see. This is as good as saving the password within the casino software.
